What Are Abortion Pills?

The term “abortion pill” refers to a two-drug process used in early pregnancy: mifepristone and misoprostol.

Mifepristone is taken first. It works by blocking progesterone, a hormone necessary for the pregnancy to continue developing.

Misoprostol is taken 24–48 hours later. It causes the uterus to contract, leading to cramping and bleeding as the pregnancy is expelled.

The abortion pill is FDA-approved for use during the first 10 weeks of gestation. Cramping and vaginal bleeding are expected parts of the abortion pill; however, the intensity of pain can vary from woman to woman. Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or chills.

As with any medical process, there are potential risks. These can include incomplete abortion (when tissue remains in the uterus), allergic reaction, prolonged or heavy bleeding, or infection. In certain cases, immediate medical evaluation and treatment may be necessary.

Seeking medical evaluation before making a decision can help you better understand your individual risk factors.

Important Health Considerations

The abortion pill is not recommended for everyone. Factors such as how far along you are, your medical history, and the location of the pregnancy can affect whether abortion pills are appropriate.

It may not be a safe option if you are beyond the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, have an ectopic pregnancy, are allergic to the drugs used, use long-term corticosteroids, have certain medical conditions such as a bleeding disorder, significant anemia, or chronic adrenal failure, or do not have access to emergency medical care.

An ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy developing outside the uterus) cannot be treated with abortion pills and requires immediate medical attention. That’s why confirming details about your pregnancy is an important first step before making any decision.
