What Minnesota Law Says About Abortion in the Second Trimester
In Minnesota, abortion is legal at all stages of pregnancy, including the second trimester, under current state law.
In 1995, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled in Doe v. Gomez that the state constitution protects a person’s right to choose abortion. Later, in 2023, Minnesota passed the Protect Reproductive Options (PRO) Act, which reinforced access to abortion under state law.
It is important to understand that the type of abortion you choose, however, may not be available depending on how far along you are. Medical abortion is only approved through ten weeks of gestation by the FDA. Using it past this point can come with risks, such as an incomplete abortion.
As pregnancy progresses into the second trimester, the next abortion option is a surgical abortion. This is performed in a clinical or hospital setting, and the approach used depends on gestational age and individual medical factors.
Parenting in the Second Trimester
Parenting can feel overwhelming, especially if your pregnancy is unexpected, but support resources may be available for financial assistance, education, and housing.
Our center offers a Stepping Stone program for new parents that covers everything from breastfeeding to infant care, with opportunities to earn care items and vouchers as you learn.
Consider what support systems are available to you, including family and friends. If you do not have any support, you can join community groups. You don’t have to feel alone.
Adoption in the Second Trimester
Considering adoption during the second trimester can feel nerve-wracking if you don’t know much about the process. Modern adoption allows for various arrangements, depending on your preferences. Adoption plans can be open, semi-open, or closed.
Open adoption means you can have contact with the child and a relationship, semi-closed means communication is via a third party, and closed keeps you anonymous with no contact.
Support is available throughout your pregnancy and after delivery. Adoption can be a bittersweet experience, but it is also a selfless decision. Your emotions are valid, no matter how you feel.
