Adoption laws vary from state to state. Working with a reputable state-licensed agency is vital to ensure you receive all available benefits if you choose adoption.

It is illegal to receive payment directly for placing your child for adoption in every state. However, Minnesota law does allow authorized payments through a licensed adoption provider.

If you’re considering making an adoption plan for your child and would like more information, talk with an advocate at Elevate. Although we are not a licensed child-placing agency, we can provide referrals. Contact us to learn more.

Do I Have to Pay to Place My Child?

No professional adoption coordinator should ever charge you for their services. The entire process, including medical and legal fees, is provided at no cost.

Adoption is a unique and deeply personal decision. It can be emotionally difficult. The adoption professional assisting you must provide counseling to ensure it’s the right choice for you and your baby.

You need to be supported both physically and mentally. By removing some of the financial strain, you can receive proper prenatal healthcare and potential assistance for other expenses.

What Expenses Does Minnesota Law Allow?

Minnesota adoption law allows for the following expenses to be paid for an expectant mother or birth mother:

  • Reasonable counseling, medical, and legal fees are to be paid directly to the provider.
  • Reasonable expenses for transportation, meals, and lodging as they pertain to the above services related to the pregnancy, birth, or placement.
  • All adoption agency services.
  • Reasonable living expenses not including lost wages, gifts, educational, or other similar expenses.

How Do I Begin Making a Plan?

Today’s adoption process is very different from that of a few decades ago. Now, it’s the expectant mother or birth mother who makes all of the decisions.

You have the right to select the family who will raise your child and the future you hope they will have. Additionally, you can select a plan based on how much contact you wish to have with your child and their adoptive family.

You can choose between an open, semi-open, or closed plan. Come to Elevate Pregnancy and Family Resource Center for more information. We also offer pregnancy services at no cost to you.
